‘The residents have many opportunities for activity and stimulation in the home and for trips outside the home.’

CQC Inspection Report, April 2010

Arbory boasts a designated, full-time Activities Co-ordinator called Sammy who leads the staff in ensuring that there is something on offer for everyone.

The team is tasked with delivering a programme that enhances the quality of residents’ day-to-day, by capturing their interest, promoting exercise and group participation, whilst catering for self-stimulation.

Each morning the staff seek to get the residents motivated and moving using seated physical activities such as ‘Vitalise’, a keep fit programme that uses different sized and textured balls, or even a game of indoor basketball! Reminiscence sessions that utilise replicas of 1940s identity cards, money and ration books ensure that the mind isn’t neglected either, stimulating discussions and helping to recreate memories.

The afternoons adopt a more social focus, as residents can participate in beetle drives, musical bingo or arts and crafts. Weekly clubs such as gardening, baking, flower-arranging and needlework supplement the timetable, whilst professional musicians or scheduled film nights provide light entertainment.

Outings are an important part of the activities programme to keep residents engaged with the local community and our wheelchair friendly mini-bus ensures that no-one is left at home, whether it is to a picnic around the lake, a visit to the garden centre or a meal-out at the local pub!

The activities are often shaped by a designated theme each month, for example Christmas, St George’s or VE Day. Staff members take great care in decorating the Home in keeping with the theme and friends and family are invited to a banquet to mark the festival or celebration.
