At Arbory, we recognise that ensuring meaningful support to people with dementia demands a particular expertise. We have developed a specialist programme based on the principles of activity, stimulation, socialisationand nutrition to build on the foundation of exceptional care that we provide as a matter of course.
We develop every resident’s care plan with the individual concerned and any family or friends they wish to involve. By gaining an understanding of the person’s life history, needs, interests and abilities, we can ensure that the support on offer is appropriate. This includes gathering information about family and social networks, education, past occupations, food preferences and hobbies in order to create a holistic picture of a person’s likes and dislikes so that we can offer a lifestyle that is fulfilling and motivating.
Whether encouraging residents to continue making pots of tea or doing their own laundry, engaging them in activities like bingo or gardening or even providing rummage chests and quiet corners to explore, we seize every opportunity to engage our residents at a level that suits them.
‘The home was full of interest, from having special touching quilts with buttons and beads attached to chests of drawers with many items the residents could look at or touch’.
CQC Inspection Report, April 2010
We have discovered that simple features can help to promote socialisation and individualism. The Cafe on the terrace provides a forum for meeting with family and friends that generates a sense of being out and about whilst maintaining the comfort and safety of home, whilst installing a bus stop in the grounds offers a mechanism for engaging in a memorable routine and ordinary activity. The introduction of old-fashioned prams with a baby doll tucked under the blanket encourages comforting feelings of being needed, stimulates interaction and conversation and jogs familiar memories.
We understand the importance of not only involving family members in the care of our residents and keeping them informed of any developments in their loved one’s condition, but also helping to ensure that our residents can continue to participate in family life. We can lend out our specialised turn-table equipment so that even those with limited mobility need never miss out on a special occasion with their family.
